Bikes of San Francisco screen printed poster

Simple, straightforward, and oh-so-accurate.

From San Francisco-based cyclist and artist Tor Weeks comes this witty, beautiful screen printed poster. This two-color print was originally made for the San Francisco iteration Artcrank, a print show featuring bicycle-inspired artwork by local artists.

Maybe I like this print because it celebrates the architecture of the bicycle. Or maybe I like it because the wheel-less frame strapped to a pole in the Tenderloin speaks to an experience I once had with a cherished Bianchi road bike at the corner of O’Farrell and Leavenworth…

Either way. Bikes and screenprinting. Artcrank is on to something. See more photos below.

Fluorescent screen prints from Mike Perry

Geometry gone insane.

Last month we received a snazzy set of screen prints in the mail from illustrator and designer Mike Perry. They’re the kind of prints that make your eyes wiggle, with six neon and fluorescent inks butting up against each other to create really nice contrast.

Mike will soon be releasing his third book through Princeton Architectural Press, a catalog of screen printing called Pulled. You can pre-order it through Chronicle Books and be the first to receive it when it releases on March 23.

Check out more photos and information about the prints after the jump.

Edits by Edit: The Printing Process

Thirteen posters, four days: a screen printing process in Brooklyn.

Though these posters have already made their way around the blogosphere, we just stumbled upon this stunning set of process photos. They’re just so fun to browse that we couldn’t help but give them some Bangback love. This collaborative poster series was conceived by Edit, a designer who spends his time “crafting compelling concepts and making them happen.” They were screen-printed at Axelle Fine Prints in Brooklyn over a four-day period.

The thirteen multiple-color screen printed posters were created by a collection of designers that includes Duane King, Collective Approach, and Manual Creative. Each poster is a visual rumination on a genre of music, created using only one element and one typeface. What started out sounding like an assignment from an introductory design class turned into a beautiful and understated selection of graphic delights.

Chipboard holiday friends from Tad Carpenter

Screen printed little homies that will make your heart melt.

In case you hadn’t noticed, we’re a bit obsessed with chipboard. Its thickness and speckled texture make it a favorite in our print shop. That, plus the fact that it’s 100% recycled and made from 85% post-consumer material, mean we use it a lot. Like, a lot.

Kansas City, Missouri-based illustrator and designer Tad Carpenter is also a fan of chipboard. He screen printed these absurdly charming Holiday Homies on the recycled stock, in navy blue, red and opaque white ink. Each comes with a little stand so they can keep you company on your desk, kitchen counter, fireplace mantle (etc.) all season long. Cute overload. Print made fun. We approve.

Item: Holiday Homies
Artist: Tad Carpenter
Method of Printing: Screen printing
Paper: Chipboard
Ink: Red, blue and opaque white
Available: Online, $10

Nudity in Groups

A mostly-annual collaboration of artists on paper.

Nudity in Groups is a collaborative publication that is released on a somewhat regular basis. Described as both “mostly quarterly” and “semi-annual,” the publication contains art work curated or created by its contributors. Now in its second issue, Nudity in Groups is orchestrated by Portland artists Alex Felton and Kevin Abell, published by Fast Weapons, and features contributions from a rotating group of artists.

Its atypical format at once limits and accentuates the content: one side features artist contributions and the other is an oversized poster image. The content speaks to no overarching theme other than the restrictions of dimension. Screen-printed in a numbered edition of 250, the first issue of Nudity in Groups was released in conjunction with a sculptural installation called Bleach Party at Vestibule.

Steady Print Shop Co.

Printing in the Twin Cities.

Erik Hamline is the Steady Print Shop Co., a Minneapolis-based screen printing studio outputting witty and beautiful work. A sly grin crept onto my face each time I browsed through a new print in his online portfolio. First comes wide-eyed amazement at the technical prowess each embodies. And then, occasionally, you uncover the clever joke hiding beneath layers of ink.

This vintage-y four-color screen print was created for an Aesthetic Apparatus-curated print folio exchange of work inspired by the HBO series Deadwood. In addition to printed gems like this, Hamline makes stellar design work under the moniker Woods & Weather.
