Bikes of San Francisco screen printed poster

Simple, straightforward, and oh-so-accurate.

From San Francisco-based cyclist and artist Tor Weeks comes this witty, beautiful screen printed poster. This two-color print was originally made for the San Francisco iteration Artcrank, a print show featuring bicycle-inspired artwork by local artists.

Maybe I like this print because it celebrates the architecture of the bicycle. Or maybe I like it because the wheel-less frame strapped to a pole in the Tenderloin speaks to an experience I once had with a cherished Bianchi road bike at the corner of O’Farrell and Leavenworth…

Either way. Bikes and screenprinting. Artcrank is on to something. See more photos below.

Mara Murphy and Anna Branning joined forces in 2006 to start Dutch Door Press in an old Victorian house in San Francisco. If you were to enter their workspace through–yep, you guessed it–the dutch door, you’d find these two ladies hard at work on their Chandler & Price press, putting out limited-edition runs of expertly illustrated pieces that pay homage to vintage Dutch illustration style. We were first introduced to the beautiful work of Dutch Door Press at the Renegade Craft Fair in San Francisco and we’re excited to share it now. At least one member of the Pinball team took home a gorgeous green and yellow print of Oregon’s state bird and flower…

Word on the street is that Dutch Door is about to launch a line of dish towels and men’s t-shirts on their soon-t0-be-redesigned website! Keep your eye on these ladies.

Levi’s Print Workshop

Time to work!

Just to further prove that interest in the art of print is alive and kicking, Levi’s opened the doors this week to their new Valencia Street printing workshop in San Francisco. Slated to operate for eight weeks in the temporary (but beautifully set-up) 3,000 square foot storefront, it offers hands-on training in letterpress and silkscreen printing, as well as many print and literary oriented events. The first of what hopefully will be many workshops, Levi’s is focusing on craft and craftspeople, as well as bringing together community through the act of creating. Read More »
