Pinball Designer Card: Jess Hirsch, Opaque White and Chipboard

Experimental offset printing: success!

Here at Pinball Publishing, we’re all about collaboration, fun, and exquisite printing.

The latest installment in our designer card series combines these tenets, and features a photograph from Jess Hirsch, former Pinballer and artist extraordinaire. Jess is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is currently working toward her MFA in sculpture, and her new work includes engaging work like the Folk Feng Shui series, featured on this Designer Card.

These chipboard pocket postcards feature black ink overprinted on opaque white, to create a duotone image that almost shimmers. The black is rendered warm by its semi-transparent nature and the (somewhat translucent) opaque white ink creates a nuanced brightness when printed on the chipboard. The printing of these cards was wholly experimental (we didn’t know how they’d turn out!) but we’re positive the results were a success.

See the rest of the Pinball Publishing Designer Card series here, and find more of Jess’s work in her online portfolio. You can find these cards at select locations in Portland, New York and San Francisco. See more photos and print details below!

2011 Calendar; silver and black on chipboard

Kristina Mueller created this silver-y 2011 calendar as part of a promo package for the New Year. It’s printed on chipboard which makes it extra great. The tactile-ness of the chipboard is allowed to show through the ink in small speckles, contrasting nicely with the silver-and-black sleekness of this piece. Each one is unique!

Concert ticket by Mike King for Stumptown Coffee

When Mike King and Stumptown Coffee collide, beautiful things emerge.

Stumptown Coffee has a history of working with an expansive cast of artists, designers and illustrators, making for a varied aesthetic that has room for all types of creative work. Counted in the roster of Stumptown creative collaborators (among many others) are Tim Root, OMFGCO, Jesse Whipple Vickery, and the ever-prolific Mike King.

Though you might be most familiar with Mike King’s screen printed poster work (Editor’s note: we interviewed him here on Bangback a few months back) he’s a skilled designer whose work spans medium and method. He created these concert tickets for Stumptown’s anniversary show, an epic line-up of metal bands booked to celebrate 11 years of good coffee.

"These words shaped history. They belong to you. Know them."

Containing the Preamble, the seven Articles and the twenty-seven Amendments, this tiny book packs the content into 32 pages and is wrapped in a two-color chipboard cover printed in black and metallic gold inks.

Holiday greeting cards for Daytrip Society

Holidays and whales

Well, three of these greeting cards are for the holidays and one is not. It’s about love and whales. Either way, they all have a little to do with getting outside and enjoying the sights. Owners of Daytrip Society, Jessica Jenkins and Andy West, consider themselves “ardent daytrippers” and offer their shop as a destination for those inspired by romance and the outdoors. They began Daytrip Society in their home state of Maine with the purpose of encouraging others to go on adventures, or at the very least, surround themselves with little pieces of nature.

Red and white business cards for Fifty Licks, Yum!

Yum, yum! Good for the tum!

It may be getting colder around these parts, but I for one, can always eat ice cream. The Fifty-Licks menu is comprised of some really fun flavors including Maple with Bacon and Carmelized Apple. They even make grown-up ice cream: Slabtown Whiskey, whoa. If you live in Portland, look for a Fifty-Licks ice cream truck soon as well as a cart opening up. In the meantime, there are a number of other locations that serve their handmade ice cream. Ask and you shall receive.
