Investigating a Baltimore print shop

Artifacts from Globe Poster Printing in Baltimore

“Before the digital revolution took over the world of design, some print shops designed and produced their work by hand for a well-inked press. Producing posters, billboards, and even simple handbills required teams of skilled tradespeople.” — Joel Galbreath

Joel Galbreath completed a thesis project for his MFA in Graphic Design at Maryland Institute College of Art in 2009. Entitled Globe Poster Printing: A Partial Collection of Specimens, Galbreath’s project was a nine-month investigation into the “forms, artifacts and aesthetics” of Globe Poster Printing in Baltimore.

That a graphic design thesis was executed to pay homage and bring recognition to the import of specialized tradespeople in the history of graphic design is exciting. Too often we’re content to ogle finished design pieces without a thought to the labor or skill involved in their production. Here’s to Joel for dedicating his time to this investigation, and here’s to job shops like Globe whose ephemeral works translated to a lasting aesthetic contribution to communication design.

Also, the project yielded some rather beautiful printed studies. We’d recommend checking them out.

Washington and California, represent!

Printer: Dutch Door Press/Mara Murphy
Designer: Dutch Door Press/Anna Branning
Printing: Letterpress

Ink: Rubber -based Van Son ink
Paper: Stonehenge Warm White
Dimensions: 5″ x 7″

Available: Etsy

Mara Murphy and Anna Branning joined forces in 2006 to start Dutch Door Press in an old Victorian house in San Francisco. If you were to enter their workspace through–yep, you guessed it–the dutch door, you’d find these two ladies hard at work on their Chandler & Price press, putting out limited-edition runs of expertly illustrated pieces that pay homage to vintage Dutch illustration style. We were first introduced to the beautiful work of Dutch Door Press at the Renegade Craft Fair in San Francisco and we’re excited to share it now. At least one member of the Pinball team took home a gorgeous green and yellow print of Oregon’s state bird and flower…

Word on the street is that Dutch Door is about to launch a line of dish towels and men’s t-shirts on their soon-t0-be-redesigned website! Keep your eye on these ladies.

Jennifer Daniel, Unicorn Groomer

D A N I E L U N I C O R N

Jennifer Daniel's new letterpress-printed business cards.

Troublemaker, rascal*, and art-director / illustrator Jennifer Daniel’s new business cards are hot off the press at Ohio’s Cranky Pressman. You’ve likely encountered her work as a contributing artist at the Morning News, as one of Print Magazine’s 20 under 30 New Visual Artists, or one of her zillions of editorial illustrations in the New York Times. These cards, however, portray her job title as “unicorn groomer.” They feature letterpressed ASCII artwork of stars, a heart, and a unicorn and are printed on two colors of specially bonded paper stock:

Cranky Pressman created a duplexed paper where two different colors of stock are bonded together. Pop-Tone in Sweet Tooth and Razzleberry colors by French Paper Co. was used, each in 100 lb. cover weight bringing the finished weight of the card to a heavy 200 lbs. The card fronts were letterpress printed in 2 colors, Black and Rubine Red with matching Rubine edge tinting.

Alabama Letterpress

Letterpress poster from Rural Studio Film Series

I just got back from a week long trip to the Rural Studio in Newbern, Alabama. A quick backgrounder to bring you up to speed:

The studio was founded in 1993 by architects Samuel Mockbee and D. K. Ruth.” — Wikipedia

Danny Wicke, a faculty architect, shared with me some of his favorite printed ephemera from life at the Rural Studio.
