Business Cards from Sire Press

On chipboard, no less!

Sire Press is an independent, DIY company made of “artists, musicians, professionals, and straight up awesome people,” specializing in short run CD/DVD duplication and packaging, often featuring their great screen printing work! It began as a one man show in Philadelphia, PA with owner, Chris Romano, hand creating and assembling all client projects himself. Now, Chris is no longer so lonely, he’s in a bigger location and has some really great past work in the Sire Press portfolio. They were kind enough to send over a project they worked on recently – a business card for Shannon Ferguson!

What they had to say about the project:

We love screen printing! We are mostly a CD/DVD Duplication Company, but every now and then a client sees the light and asks us to screen print a project for them. We had the luxury of both being able to design and screen print this one. This time around we used a ‘dirty’ screen in order to get a series of random wear marks in the red layer. Each business card appears to be worn in different areas of the reels. I also love the imperfection in the recycled paper used and how the red ink shows up brighter on top of the white and darker when it’s printed directly on the chipboard. This happens a little bit on the left side of the reels.

In the Summer, I’m Dreaming of You

In color.

This project comes to us from Perry Pfister of The Tiny Spoon Screen Printing in Portland, OR. The design is by Mark Warren Jacques and it is available on his website as well as some other beautiful eye candy.

Perry says of the project:

This was a fun project for me. Mark and I work together on a bunch of projects, but he is normally printing with me, and mixes his own colors. He was on tour with he and Seth Neefus’ project, The Free Life Center, in San Francisco, so he left the files with me, and gave me a general idea of the colors. The colors on the print appear blue, purple, red, orange, and yellow, but I just printed blue, red, and yellow, before printing the waves. The colors are mixed with a transparent base to allow the color beneath them and the paper character to be a part of the color itself. It was a little nerve wracking to try to have these colors blend properly, as to appease an artist who I know has an amazing relationship with color. I love working with other people, on any type of project. I have my understanding of printing, and an artist comes to me with an idea that they want to screen print, and we get to figure out how it can come to fruition, and I end up with a complete expansion of my understanding of what’s possible. I’m down for anything. Mark and I printed 160 feet of 2 foot wide wall paper for another one of his shows. Screen printing seems to have an endless amount of applications and possibilities.

Freedom on the Fence: A Documentary

Roman Cieślewicz

As the ultimate site for public expression, city streets have seen their fair share of art. This was certainly true in Poland under the Communist government, especially in the 50′s and 60′s, when the printed poster lined sidewalks, covered kiosks, and gradually spread to any free space available. Andrea Marks, professor of graphic design at Oregon State, was so interested in the collision of print and hushed rebellion that happened there that she decided to go to Poland and record that which has made such an incredible impression on design history. Freedom on the Fence is the resulting documentary and Andrea Marks was so kind as to answer some questions for us.
